GROUP BLOG: WEEK 1 & 2

Week one:

Alex Nicholls  -  Research  - Sequence of Events / possible ideas of events

David Allison -  Research  - Environments , layouts / of pearl harbour

Austin Spill man - research - Models, planes etc.

Curtis south - research - documentary styles { how documentaries present themselves } and Camera angle ideas.

As a group we set up a Facebook virtual environments page to discuss and share our thoughts on the subject.

Alex Nicholls:

1st of October - Alex Nicholls - shared on Facebook an link to website displaying a lot of information on the events of pearl harbour and explains in great detail about many things that happened on the day, where carriers were and so on. this resource will be very useful to get an idea in mind.

- Sequence of Events at Pearl Harbour was researched by Alex from this website which was put on a document to outline the main events.

David Allison:

3rd of October - David Allison shared with the group that he was looking into learning vue for the video project, "vue is offers professional CG artists a complete tool set for creating and rendering exceptionally rich and realistic natural environments in 3ds Max".
he said he like to volunteer for creating the landscape, trees, water and even fire and smoke effects fume fx.

David also is interested in creating the effects with software plugins so the rest of the group can create the number of models and David will collect them and place them in this 3d max landscape environment he's experimenting with.

Curtis South:

Whist looking into how a documentary presents itself looking at a number of documentaries I came across a YouTube video that featured a piece of audio broadcast that was transmitted on the day, then an idea came to my mind, thinking alone that idea  a piece of  audio could introduce our video, the idea first started from when I heard a piece of broadcast audio in a previous years video shown to us in week one, but the idea came up fully when I heard the broadcast from a YouTube video.

An idea of a black screen and fading in from the black comes a 1930s broadcasters microphone drewn by myself in adobe software and in a editing software as the audio clip plays a spotlight moves over the microphone as the microphone zooms closely in.

update this was not used but can be viewed on the handed in disc.

A simple idea but I thought this could introduce our video.

My idea video I made that could introduce our video.

Austin Spillman:

3rd of October -  Austin suggested an idea to the group about the amount of focus around pearl harbour or the narrative of being directed at pearl harbour itself, Austin suggested  telling a story point of view from the Japanese point of view after looking into Japanese soldiers uniforms and Hideki Tojo { the man who ordered the attack on pearl harbour }

Austin idea would consist of talking about pearl harbour but from an interesting different perceptive, which is a nice idea and would be different.

As its early days its up to us as a group to decide the final idea we are going with.

Week 2 :

Curtis South: - Research images & create buildings / hangers in 3ds max

Austin Spillman - Research images & create model of the USS Arizona

David Allison - Learning Fume FX software

Alex Nicholls  -  Proposal - shot list - A draft outline { ideas } verbally

In week 2s class we as a group were talking and discussing our chosen idea of what story or part of pearl harbour we want to represent in a 3d video.

We came up with a few ideas:

One was about the events of what the USS Arizona was doing on the day of the pearl harbour, about what the USS Arizona had to deal with against the Japanese planes, and how its tragic fight lead to its sinking and ending up at the bottom of the harbour.

Another idea was about telling the pearl harbour story from the Japanese perceptive, talking about how the Japanese ordered the attack on pearl harbour. To create a unique and interesting side of telling the events.

the other idea was to choose a scene from the events at pearl harbour and telling a story about the damaged side of the attack or the main events of the planes coming in to blow up the carriers.

After discussing the possible ideas we came to a conclusion as a whole group unanimously,  based on our finding about the USS Arizona that we will create an animation telling and showing USS Arizona's story of its fight with the Japanese planes in battle leading up to when she sank into the harbour.

Including in the  video of The USS Arizona the ford island would feature in the video because that's where the USS Arizona was at the time. so as well as creating the model of the USS Arizona, the group will create the ford island buildings like hangers and the radio tower as well.

David Allison:

During our discussion on the chosen idea, we were shown photo's by David  showing  aerial photos taken from the air of the ford island part of pearl harbour, which he referenced from forums and websites, which was very useful to map out what the ford island looks like and possible building shapes.

As David Allison is creating the landscape, he can use these photos to create the ford island and surrounding areas easier.
