Alex is ready with the editing process, meaning all the narration is positioned with the sound effects and music, so all he needs is the rendered scenes.

David:

David is working on a new ford island which he is creating in mud box, Mudbox is a computer-based 3d sculpting and painting tool software and as mud box is developed by Autodesk the file should merge with each other , this is because the first ford island was created in a VIEW modelling software and importing it in a 3ds max file gives the model a high poly count and this is hard to handle for the 3ds max software, so creating it mud box should help make a ford island model with a lower poly count.

David is also converting all view files like backdrops to a 3ds max file for all of the other members to have a file, so it will be a file shared out that will have all of the same lighting settings, render settings etc, this keeps all of the scenes consist and helping them to stay the same between the different members.

All models like the ship to the planes and building will be placed in this one 3ds max file for all the other members.

The render settings will be done before in the file before its given to other members, that way  Curtis, Alex and Austin has to set up the camera , animate a scene and then press render when finished.

The file should be ready for the other members by Wednesday the 20th of November.

GROUP BLOG - Week 5 & 6

Curtis

From last week the group were discussing more development to the ford island so I was creating more buildings to make the ford island stand out with more.

Over the week I have created four types of buildings from a hanger to office buildings, I have also created a us navy SB2u plane to go outside the hangers and I have created as we discussed to improve the ford island as it will appear in the shots is a docking platform for boats.

All the models have been textured and overall have come out as i wanted, the group members have seen the models and like how they came out.

David:

Has spent his time developing explosions on my first models have given him, which is the radio tower and hanger.

David now plans to now take that explosion and try to upscale it, because at this point in time when up scaling the explosion it seems to change the shape of the explosion.

David has contributed towards the rendering process, using view, 3ds maxes plug in, he knows the software to get the best and higher quality rendering.

David has also calculated the best way we can render out our scenes, by rendering out a scene of a e.g. plane flying by the camera, using a render output of a HDTV video, PNG  setting configuration with a mental ray renderer, which means the render frames will be placed in a folder as images then can be placed in a editing software, overlaid over the static scene of the ford island, this was discussed because doing it this way means depending on the render time, if the software freezes', the images will start from where they stopped and you don't have to start again like a mpeg render.

With a alpha channel and a RGB 48bit, good quality footage can be obtained and render time will decrease.

But this does leave a problem as Alex thinks its better to do it another way by all of us having the file of the ford island setting, with water and the boat in and create out scenes in the file, but between David’s idea and Alex idea I think the best idea is David’s to go with.

Alex

Has been developing the shot list and has been creating models for the ford island like barrels and a boat model to go with the docking platform I have created.

Alex has also constructing and calculating the video timescale, using my narration as a guide line Alex has worked out that the video will be 2 minute to 2 minute and a half video, based on the recording time of the narration.

Alex has looked into the editing of the timeline by resources music as well as sound effects this should help when all the scenes have been constructed.

Week 6 -

Curtis –

This week’s modelling I am aiding the development to the USS Arizona Mid ship area, this is to help the group forward the modelling of the ship, because during week 5 Austin was busy and did not get much done to the modelling development of the ship, I have stepped in to help finish the ship.

I have rerecorded the script narration for the video for Alex to place ready in the premiere file he’s created ready for the scenes to be imported in.

David has been experimenting with new explosion effects, the video below shows the view plugin braking and exploding the side of the radio tower for a scene in the storyboard.

David will spend this week importing all the models and exporting all the models into one 3ds max file for the other members of the group to start creating the scenes we chose to do.

The downside to placing all the models in one 3ds max file from the view plugin is the models will need to be retextured because otherwise the export process between view and max will be huge.

Austin has been developing and finalising the detail on the USS Arizona and now he as the mid ship area created by Curtis, Austin will texture the mid ship area and the USS Arizona will be finished ready for shooting the scenes.

Changes to the Scene creation

The group have decided as well as the rendering process of exporting scenes with planes out as picture PNG configurations, the group have changed their idea of how the scene in 3ds max is going to be created, before the group were going with the idea of rendering the scenes in the 3ds max plugin software called view, but this was changed because the render time is very high and only one member would be able to do the rendering, giving that member a lot of work to do and making the rest of the members not doing as much.

The new idea is to change the water plug in that was in view, causing the high render files and replace with a water plugin. So that it can be placed in a 3ds max file, that way every member can have a file to work from and it will take the work load off one member who has this plugin special software, which is costly for every member to have.

Changing the water plugin from view to a water plug in called Houdini Ocean, every member can now use it in the file David’s placing all the models in, ready for the upcoming scenes to create.

GROUP BLOG - Week 4

Developments on the storyboard:

The group decided that at the beginning of the storyboard the title sequence could be taken out and replaced by a static atmosphere shot of the sounds of the location.

Then as the USS Arizona comes in and the narrator starts the intro credits appear over the top including our names.

The group decided altogether that intro credits into the footage instead of a documentary style title sequence was a much better idea, this way the video starts out and acts like a film would, giving the video more atmosphere feeling without the need of a title sequence being separate to the rest of the video, the intro credits flows with the rest of the video, which makes the video as a whole much better in appearance but also in atmosphere to the story.

One of the storyboard scene where the sides of the USS Arizona gets blown out and debris gets thrown towards the camera has been discussed by the group of having that scene, not take place from a camera perspective from the ford island but instead have the camera close up to feel more of the impact of the damage taken to the ship.

Although one member found the shot ok as it was and some members decided it should be close up, the shot was decided to be a medium shot, met in the middle and the group confirmed that to be fine.

Ford island where about in the storyboard = although the ford island in the storyboard was shown in the background of the shots, more than the group first though, originally the ford island was going to be mainly shown in the video, but over the weeks including the storyboards development the ford islands got placed back in the background again, this does not mean the construction of the tower and hanger models have been wasted, as the models will still be seen in the aerial shots from the planes, as they fly over the island and then attack the u.s.s Arizona.

Also shots have been designed in the storyboard to feature perspectives from the ford island, but as a group we now have developed our idea that we don’t need to create a full ford island when we can use only a part of it to emphasize  the scene for the storyboard.

Even though the ford island has been developed differently, during development on our brief idea of what we want to do and the storyboard, it needed to be there because the event  we decided was about the USS Arizona and the ford island acts as an extra to aid visual interest in some scenes.

Alex has continued to develop his model of a Mitsubishi Zero fighter plane, which  has improved in the shape and aerodynamics of the wings and main structure of the plane which shows up well as the model features.

Texture has been added to the model, using textures created by Alex himself in photo shop, which give the model a preview of what it will look like when it’s completed.

The textures at this time are a prototype, so the textures will be improved over the weeks to add rivet detail.

This week Alex came across a texturing problem where the planes back tail when applied with a texture would have a slightly lighter colour tone than the other textures on the plane. Only causing this colour toning change on one back wing polygon, which Alex can’t explain why this is happening considering that all the textures were done in Photoshop and were saved out of the same texture colour.

Combined to prepare for the editing process later on in the production of this video Alex and I have gathered many sound effects and music for the video ready to place in the video editing software. By gathering them now it’s done ready for the editing stage.

Rangeing from sounds that associate with the storyboard shots from ambient sound of the sea, explosion sounds and plane sounds.

Curtis

Over the last week I have recorded the narration from the script that will play in our finished video

Using the 24 bit wave/ mp 3 recorder – r-09 I recorded a number of times on the script, first I started by having the mic gain set to low, so that the recorder did not pick up any other interrupting sounds going on in the background.

But this resulted in the audio being very quiet even thought I was not standing that far away, I decided not to be as near as right to my mouth was to not pick up speech interference s  .

Next I placed the recorder close to me and the result came out as I wanted to avoid, the mic was to close and pick up the speech interference's.

So changing the mic gain up and standing a suitable distance away, the results were the best and I had no intruding sounds in the background as I first thought before I turned down the mic gain.

The developments on the buildings for the ford island are now textured and have more detail applied to them, the hanger in particular.

The radio tower upon looking at it a number of times may need re-texturing in some places, but other than that both model look really nicely designed and now I am moving onto the modelling the ford islands decking { by the sea } and more related time period buildings to fill up the islands land.

David

David has spent the last week looking at tutorials and plug ins on the View and fume FX to improve the quality of the land and sea.

Whist doing this David ran into some problems which have been solved but due to the software handing / methods of adding a number of different plug INS David has had to render/ create these effects in a different way.

One problem that came up in the software View and Fume FX is that when it comes to rendering out your effects in explosions or water effects from both software, both software don’t want to render at the same time, so one software render has to be done first, then the other software render is done after and then you composite the two rendered files together later,  which adds to the time to creating the video/ effects, it would be a benefit if the software plug ins would run together.

Also another situation for David occurred in the view plug in software where he was working on the displacement of the water waves movements to make them move and look realistic, but when viewing the results the underwater scenes that will appear in one of our scenes of the video, the acoustics and light rays were creating grainy renders.

This was solved by increasing the quality settings in the water movement.

Austin

Austin has improved more on the shape and proportions of the USS Arizona hull, improving more on some imperfections that he has noticed and making sure that the segments that make the ship up are smooth and aligned right without having any distorted segments for the rendering process {topology}.

GROUP BLOG: WEEK 3

Curtis south – Modelling and creating a ford island radio tower and hanger.

Developing and designing the storyboard and draft script

Curtis south –

A script has been written detailing the facts of the USS Arizona actions and events but also allowing the narration to be interesting and not dull in what the narrator is saying, at times the narrator will emphases what’s going on in a scene or help direct the viewer into an emotion.

From week 2 to week 3 I started and formed up a radio tower model from referenced images, using the referenced images I have created the radio tower to look like its real life counterpart.

Constructed from individual pre-sets, this model is very basic in design but as according to the storyboard , ford island and the buildings will be in the background so they don’t have to be as detailed, but I have made it detailed in case of changed camera shots from the storyboard.

I have constructed a ford island hanger, designed better than the tower as by having the hanger being created by one or two pre-sets; it has less file size for the videos.

Radio tower – how I found it – I found working on the radio tower easy and straight forward because the majority of the building is made out of multiple pieces.

The design is simple with numerous areas of detail like the stairway on the side of the tower and the radio tower control room.

Room for improvement the radio tower can be made more detailed because referencing the storyboard in a number of scenes I have designed, the ford island will be shown in some shots by the planes flying over or the number of camera angles being placed on the ford island itself.

Hanger – how I found it  - I found the hanger much better to work on than the tower because of its simple structure.

I made the hanger from one pre-set, by exuding and shaping it to look like a hanger; it looks exactly like its real life counterpart.

The hanger has room for improvement including a roof and back detail to the hanger, but out of the two I have created my favourite is the hanger because of how its constructed and the model is a lesser file size to the tower, meaning I can have multiple hangers in a scene and not over use the file size.

I have developed the storyboard – keeping to the events of the USS Arizona's where about tells it's story on the pearl harbour day – the storyboard  mainly consists of the USS Arizona itself and the planes, as the planes in a swam take down the mighty ship.

The storyboard incorporates interesting and different perceptive camera angles between the USS Arizona and the Japanese planes, from the planes dropping bombs to the USS Arizona firing its turrets.

The storyboard incorporates many camera angles such as angled shots to high shots, looking down shots, close up’s, far way shots, low water line shots and under water shots.

The storyboard whist talking to our special FX creator David Allison, the different camera angles from the ship and planes allows David to experiment more with the explosions and clouds in the shots.

The storyboard shots allow the video narration to come in and out in a following pattern.

Instead of the narration being consist and standard throughout the video, certain scenes within the video allow the sounds and visuals to take over instead of a narrator being needed, so you get a complete scene of dramatic angles and camera movements from the planes and backed up with sound effects and atmosphere noises.

Alex Nicholls –

During week 3 Alex wrote down some initial concept ideas on the development of the USS Arizona theme, more of a written storyboard than pictures.

But overall the group decided to go with Curtis's storyboard based on the ideas and showing the story of the event of the USS Arizona.

Alex also created in 3ds max, a model of the nakajima bsna bomber from the six fleet Japanese aircraft carriers.

Alex found the model challenging on the design aspect of plane particularly on the wings design shape, but time consuming the design of the plane’s wings came out perfect in proportion  and design, giving the plane its aerodynamic looks and to help create the other wing on the other side of the plane Alex used the symmetry modifier to complete the model.

David Allison –

David has looked into Fume FX of explosions and clouds in numinous software and 3ds max plug INS

David has looked into Fume FX of explosions being successful in creating a good explosion effect David over the next week wants to upscale the size of the explosion rate and spread for the USS Arizona’s scenes.

David has also been looking into creating cloud effects for the sky shots, experimenting with clouds FX, the software called VIEW for creating the FX clouds  has a long render which can be a time consuming issue to the overall  export outcome of the scenes the clouds feature in.

Austin spillman –

Developing and constructing the USS Arizona Austin worked more on the ships Main turrets, which when designing them he found easy and straight forward from the few shapes to construct the turrets, overall the design of the turrets is very nicely detailed and placing shine textures to the model it looks really realistic.

The hull took a lot of planning from Austin because from the lack of good plans available of the USS Arizona, Austin had to construct his own plans of the ship and work and develop from them which has led to time consuming and stressful task of creating the hull itself because of its complex shape and design Austin worked with a lot of vertex points to pull certain areas of the hull out or in to create the structure of the hull.

One improvement that was discovered by Austin experience is that 3ds max could be developed on the constructing aspects in the software because of the time consuming creation of the hull, 3ds max could be developed to improve on the time of the creation of difficult shapes or create new tools to help craft the difficult shape better and simpler.

GROUP BLOG: WEEK 1 & 2

Week one:

Alex Nicholls  -  Research  - Sequence of Events / possible ideas of events

David Allison -  Research  - Environments , layouts / of pearl harbour

Austin Spill man - research - Models, planes etc.

Curtis south - research - documentary styles { how documentaries present themselves } and Camera angle ideas.

As a group we set up a Facebook virtual environments page to discuss and share our thoughts on the subject.

Alex Nicholls:

1st of October - Alex Nicholls - shared on Facebook an link to website displaying a lot of information on the events of pearl harbour and explains in great detail about many things that happened on the day, where carriers were and so on. this resource will be very useful to get an idea in mind.

- Sequence of Events at Pearl Harbour was researched by Alex from this website which was put on a document to outline the main events.

David Allison:

3rd of October - David Allison shared with the group that he was looking into learning vue for the video project, "vue is offers professional CG artists a complete tool set for creating and rendering exceptionally rich and realistic natural environments in 3ds Max".
he said he like to volunteer for creating the landscape, trees, water and even fire and smoke effects fume fx.

David also is interested in creating the effects with software plugins so the rest of the group can create the number of models and David will collect them and place them in this 3d max landscape environment he's experimenting with.

Curtis South:

Whist looking into how a documentary presents itself looking at a number of documentaries I came across a YouTube video that featured a piece of audio broadcast that was transmitted on the day, then an idea came to my mind, thinking alone that idea  a piece of  audio could introduce our video, the idea first started from when I heard a piece of broadcast audio in a previous years video shown to us in week one, but the idea came up fully when I heard the broadcast from a YouTube video.

An idea of a black screen and fading in from the black comes a 1930s broadcasters microphone drewn by myself in adobe software and in a editing software as the audio clip plays a spotlight moves over the microphone as the microphone zooms closely in.

update this was not used but can be viewed on the handed in disc.

A simple idea but I thought this could introduce our video.

pearl harbour event broadcast audio -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e83hDgSrlbw - Pearl harbour news broadcast - YouTube - user -  Domenic Marchione

My idea video I made that could introduce our video.

Austin Spillman:

3rd of October -  Austin suggested an idea to the group about the amount of focus around pearl harbour or the narrative of being directed at pearl harbour itself, Austin suggested  telling a story point of view from the Japanese point of view after looking into Japanese soldiers uniforms and Hideki Tojo { the man who ordered the attack on pearl harbour }

Austin idea would consist of talking about pearl harbour but from an interesting different perceptive, which is a nice idea and would be different.

As its early days its up to us as a group to decide the final idea we are going with.

Week 2 :

Curtis South: - Research images & create buildings / hangers in 3ds max

Austin Spillman - Research images & create model of the USS Arizona

David Allison - Learning Fume FX software

Alex Nicholls  -  Proposal - shot list - A draft outline { ideas } verbally

In week 2s class we as a group were talking and discussing our chosen idea of what story or part of pearl harbour we want to represent in a 3d video.

We came up with a few ideas:

One was about the events of what the USS Arizona was doing on the day of the pearl harbour, about what the USS Arizona had to deal with against the Japanese planes, and how its tragic fight lead to its sinking and ending up at the bottom of the harbour.

Another idea was about telling the pearl harbour story from the Japanese perceptive, talking about how the Japanese ordered the attack on pearl harbour. To create a unique and interesting side of telling the events.

the other idea was to choose a scene from the events at pearl harbour and telling a story about the damaged side of the attack or the main events of the planes coming in to blow up the carriers.

After discussing the possible ideas we came to a conclusion as a whole group unanimously,  based on our finding about the USS Arizona that we will create an animation telling and showing USS Arizona's story of its fight with the Japanese planes in battle leading up to when she sank into the harbour.

Including in the  video of The USS Arizona the ford island would feature in the video because that's where the USS Arizona was at the time. so as well as creating the model of the USS Arizona, the group will create the ford island buildings like hangers and the radio tower as well.

David Allison:

During our discussion on the chosen idea, we were shown photo's by David  showing  aerial photos taken from the air of the ford island part of pearl harbour, which he referenced from forums and websites, which was very useful to map out what the ford island looks like and possible building shapes.

As David Allison is creating the landscape, he can use these photos to create the ford island and surrounding areas easier.

At 07:55 around the ford island USS Arizona raised it alarm of a upcoming attack.

Shortly after at 08:00 hours, Japanese aircraft from the six fleet carriers could be seen coming in the distance from the pacific.

The ship went to general quarters, an enouncement that informed the crew of an attack.

The turrets were now firing away making every shot count

But the Japanese bombers were too fast  { and at a higher quantity } , flying around the USS Arizona like a sitting duck.

Then one of Japanese horizontal bombers released and struck the USS Arizona with several bombs.

Some  of these caused damage to the midship area, but these were only minor to one bomber in particular who struck a devastating blow by damaging the ship front two main turrets, which soon lead to a massive explosion.

Without the bomb piecing the deck of the USS Arizona the reaction some what , reason un explained to this day caused the gun powder magazines below to go off, which caused a chain of explosions and a uncontrollable fire to arise.

The ship was deviated from the front of her main turrets to the back into her machinery spaces.

The ships sides were blown out and other turrets and much of the superstructure drooped several feet into the wrecked hull.

Which led to the USS Arizona becoming unstable and soon forced her into the sea.

Blazing with smoke and fire the USS Arizona quickly settled to the bottom of the bay, where she finally lay to rest.

A Consuming number of 1,177 lives were taken that day

A tragic loss

The USS Arizona then sat there at the bottom of the bay, burning away for more than two days, the remains of the wreck of the mighty ship lays there a memorial remembrances of the lives lost that never saw it coming.
